Back from vacation. And everything still sucks.
Attorney General Bill Barr went to the Hill yesterday. He lied. A lot. Rep Pramila Jayapal had some thoughts on the unequal fed response to protests... I've been saying for a while now -- law enforcement needs to dress for the event they want to go to. When you show up in riot gear, you might be more inclined to incite one.
But a new round of Coronavirus legislation is in the works. And guess what?! We will get to write off 100% of business meals! Because people are going into the office and are for sure entertaining potential clients at restaurants and the inability to do so is a real and difficult problem that could break America. Sure, Tim.
The Bulwark: Let Them Expense Cake!
If anything represents the bass-ackwards approach Republicans are taking to the coronavirus response, it might be the proposal, supported by President Trump, that Senator Tim Scott put into the latest round of coronavirus relief.
Scott wants to raise the deduction for business meals from 50 percent to a full 100 percent, which he says “will lead to more customers, more opportunities for hardworking waitstaff and kitchen staff, and much-needed revenue for small businesses across the country.”
Um, what? Almost 150,000 Americans are dead, millions of kids won’t be able to attend in-person classrooms this fall, people still can’t get fast accessible testing—and one of our top priorities is allowing a full deduction for business meals? Calling this “out-of-touch” would be generous because it would imply it was somewhere within the realm of actually being “in touch.” The only way this makes sense is if you want to skew “relief” towards steakhouses in Washington and New York. Trump Hotel may be a lobbyist hotspot, but your local pizza place most assuredly is not.
Another great thing that will solve so many problems and help all the people is spending a bunch of money to renovate FBI Headquarters in DC to keep them from moving out to the 'burbs. Why is this so important during a pandemic? Funny you should ask. It's not. It's a waste of taxpayer dollars. And it benefits the Trump Organization.
Complicating efforts for a compromise are potential conflicts of interest stemming from Trump’s continued ownership of a hotel a block down Pennsylvania Avenue. Before Trump was elected, officials at his company raised concerns about a competing hotel possibly being built in place of the Hoover Building should the FBI relocate to the suburbs.
White House officials have denied that Trump’s business interests have anything to do with his plans for the bureau’s new headquarters, and last year Trump’s company announced plans to sell the hotel’s lease. Those plans are on hold because of the economic fallout of the pandemic.
Concerns over Trump’s financial interests, however, prompted the Justice Department’s Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz to launch an investigation of the decision-making that led to the cancellation of the original plan. That investigation remains ongoing more than a year later, the inspector general’s office said Monday. A spokeswoman declined to comment further.
Not to get too Keyser Soze on you, but the greatest trick the GOP ever played was getting people to cheer them on while they robbed them blind.
The secret police/NYPD continue to demonstrate that we in fact DO need massive reform. Who could possibly think this helps?
NYPD officers dragged a protest leader into an unmarked minivan van and doused onlookers with pepper spray during an anti-police brutality march in Manhattan on Tuesday night.
The individual, who friends identified as an 18-year-old trans woman named Nicki, was grabbed from the group by plainclothes officers at 25th Street and Second Avenue. Video shows a man in an orange shirt marked "Warrant Squad" helping to push the woman into a silver KIA minivan before driving away.
What on earth is wrong with our priorities?
Instead of serving as a reward for getting our response to a global pandemic right -- by installing the necessary measures of social distancing and masks, masks that, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) could bring this thing to a manageable level within weeks -- baseball is now a microcosm of how to best battle our imploding failures, a grand experiment for our other institutions, perhaps especially the public schools that the man in the White House is so eager to reopen so America can get "back to work."...Meanwhile, despite being considered the wealthiest nation on earth, America's schools do not seem to have the infrastructure of a baseball team, and yet it is still the arena that we count on for child care during the workday, for food and social services and, in the months that are soon to come, warmth and light. As the American Academy of Pediatrics, in its statement about why school is about so much more than academics, concludes, "our nation's response to Covid-19 has laid bare inequities and consequences for children that must be addressed."Covid-19 hasn't created fractures. It has thrown a spotlight on them. Perhaps if we funded our schools like baseball -- if teachers got contracts like Mike Trout or Mookie Betts or, minimally, didn't have to pay for their own school supplies and bulletin boards -- they'd be better prepared to make it work this fall.
Understanding the critical role of public education in the American economy should have made schools priority #1 for every single person involved in addressing this crisis -- the ones whose salaries are paid with our tax dollars -- who either didn't understand or didn't care, neither of which is acceptable.
Avoid astral sex with demons and other health advice from Trump's new fave doc
Lastly, when you are out there living your life today, take care to avoid dream sex with demons and witches as it could have a negative impact on your health. She also says that hydroxychloroquine is a cure, medicines are made with alien DNA and masks aren't necessary. But like Bill Barr, the admin knows nothing about any of that... just that she's an important voice on the pandemic?
Immanuel, a pediatrician and a religious minister, has a history of making bizarre claims about medical topics and other issues. She has often claimed that gynecological problems like cysts and endometriosis are in fact caused by people having sex in their dreams with demons and witches.
She alleges alien DNA is currently used in medical treatments, and that scientists are cooking up a vaccine to prevent people from being religious. And, despite appearing in Washington, D.C. to lobby Congress on Monday, she has said that the government is run in part not by humans but by “reptilians” and other aliens.
Immanuel gave her viral speech on the steps of the Supreme Court at the “White Coat Summit,” a gathering of a handful of doctors who call themselves America’s Frontline Doctors and dispute the medical consensus on the novel coronavirus. The event was organized by the right-wing group Tea Party Patriots, which is backed by wealthy Republican donors.
She also posits that the government is run by Lizard people, but I think, if anything, that one might enhance her credibility.
We are living in a reality that is a mashup of VEEP and Idiocracy that no studio would greenlight because it was too ridiculous and unbelievable. Oh, and it's a life or death reality show that everyone is required to play.
The Sideshow - The Funny and the Bizarre
Earworms. My apologies. But...
She's not wrong.
Attorney General Bill Barr must resign.
Over the last 24 hours, the Trump family has engaged a new tone. Yes, the presidential pivot you've been longing for has finally happened. And not a moment too soon.
The anti-Trumpers are at it again - only this time, they're Republicans. Kevin, a lifelong Republican voter and pastor from Arizona, says he voted for Trump in 2016 "with high hopes for the future". He knew that Trump didn't have the same political experience as the other contenders, but he was optimistic he could grow into his new role.
Who would plant them? Oh yeah. 'Muricans.
Frankfort, Kentucky - Agriculture officials in multiple states issued warnings Monday about unsolicited shipments of foreign seeds and advised people not to plant them. In Kentucky, the state agriculture department was notified that several residents received unsolicited seed packets sent by mail that appeared to have originated in China, Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles said.
According to Wolf & Barr logic, the #NYPD are rioting 😂
Just now - at the last sunset of the last day that Congressman John Lewis will lie in state here - an honest to God rainbow shines over the Capitol. #GoodTrouble pic.twitter.com/oS3Pw93Toi
Also, the John Lewis doc, "Good Trouble" is out and available on Amazon.
Using interviews and rare archival footage, JOHN LEWIS: GOOD TROUBLE chronicles Lewis' 60-plus years of social activism and legislative action on civil rights, voting rights, gun control, health-care reform and immigration. Using present-day interviews with Lewis, now 80 years old, Porter explores his childhood experiences, his inspiring family and his fateful meeting with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
